Lore

The Bone Whale is a creature of memory and calcium. It has no skin or blubber, only a faint bioluminescent veil of blue energy clinging to its ribs like a phantom hull. Its slow, rhythmic clicking can be heard through a ship's hull for miles.

The Cephalyn call the Bone Whales the Record Keepers of the ocean and say they sing the memories of great creatures that die at sea into their own ribs. The Silkies say they are filters that clean lingering magic from dead water. A Bone Whale swimming beside your ship is said to bring calm seas.

Known Abilities

The Bone Whale

Common Classification: The Ghost of the Abyss

Status: A majestic, terrifying omen; best viewed from a very sturdy ship.

The Bone Whale is not a creature of flesh, but of memory and calcium. Seeing one crest the waves is like watching an ancient cathedral rise from the surf. They are massive, skeletal leviathans that drift through the deepest trenches, yet they possess a strange, ghostly buoyancy. They don’t have skin or blubber; instead, a faint, bioluminescent “veil” of blue energy clings to their ribs, acting as a phantom hull that keeps them afloat.

They move with a slow, rhythmic clicking that can be heard through a ship’s hull for miles. While they look like they should be dead, they are very much “alive,” or at least, they are animated by a deep-sea magic that we humans have yet to quantify.

The Mystery of the “Grave-Song”

The Bone Whale does not hunt for food. According to the Cephalyn, who live in the kelp-forests of the deep, the Bone Whales are the “Record Keepers” of the ocean. The Cephalyn claim that when a great creature dies in the sea (be it a dragon, a ship, or a giant squid), the Bone Whale “sings” the memory of that creature into its own ribs.

The Silkies are a bit more pragmatic (and less cryptic) about it. They say the whales are actually filters for “residual magic.” They believe the whales swim through patches of “dead water” and consume the lingering energy, cleaning the ocean as they go. I asked a Silkie if they ever tried to ride one, and she simply shuddered, saying that to touch a Bone Whale is to feel every cold winter the ocean has ever known.

On the Matter of Bonding

Bonding with a Bone Whale is a feat rarely achieved by land-dwellers. You cannot offer them food, and they have no interest in your “dominance.”

The Cephalyn manage it through Vibration. They use heavy, resonant drums made of hollowed coral to match the “click-rate” of the whale. If you can sync your heart rate and your rhythm to the whale’s song, it will allow you to travel in its wake, protected by its massive, ghostly presence. The Cephalyn use them as living underwater temples, sometimes even building small, temporary outposts within the massive cage of the whale’s ribs. For a human, however, the bond is purely one of Observation. If a Bone Whale chooses to swim alongside your vessel, it is said your journey will be blessed with calm seas, mostly because other predators are too terrified to come near it.

Observed Magical Variations

Because they are made of bone and spirit, their appearance depends on the “depth” of the magic they inhabit.

The Reef-GuardLight

Bleached white bones encrusted with living, glowing coral.

Found in shallower waters. They are the most “active” and have been known to protect certain islands from tidal waves by breaking the swell with their bodies.

The Abyssal-TitanShadow

Dark, iron-like bones; a deep violet “veil” of energy; eyes that glow like dim lanterns.

Rarely seen above the surface. The Cephalyn speak of these with great reverence, claiming they are as old as the sea itself.

The Frost-DrifterWater

Translucent, ice-like bones; emits a freezing mist whenever it breaches.

Found in the polar circles. They don’t just swim; they seem to “phase” through icebergs as if they weren’t there.
