Sun Beetles share the broad, humble form of the dung beetle — but instead of a sphere of waste, they roll a perfect orb of concentrated solar energy. This glowing sphere pulses with warmth even in the coldest cavern, and Sun Beetles guard it with remarkable ferocity for creatures so small. To touch a Sun Beetle's orb uninvited is to invite burns and a very determined, very angry beetle.
Their shells absorb and store sunlight, making them brightest in the hours after a long day above ground. Underground colonies of Sun Beetles use their combined orbs to illuminate vast fungal gardens deep in the earth, creating glowing cavern ecosystems that would otherwise be completely dark. Miners and cave explorers across Vaeloria consider an encounter with a Sun Beetle colony a piece of extraordinary luck — a living light source and, if treated carefully, reliable company.
Fire magic radiates from their carapace in visible waves of heat on cold mornings, and their shells shimmer with iridescent orange and gold patterns that intensify as they grow older. Elder Sun Beetles, rare and sought after, carry orbs the size of a human head that burn with enough intensity to melt iron ore — though they are, by then, extremely territorial about their collections.
