The Brawler Frog
If you were to take the raw, muscular power of a mountain gorilla and fuse it with the slick, explosive tendons of a bullfrog, you would have the Brawler Frog. They are massive, barrel-chested creatures that walk on their knuckles, yet they possess a terrifying vertical leap that can carry them into the canopy in a single bound. Their skin is thick and leathery, usually a deep moss-green with a “silverback” patch of pale, bumpy skin along their shoulders as they age.
They are the undisputed heavyweights of the humid lowlands. While they look like they should be slow, a Brawler Frog can cover a hundred yards in a series of bone-crunching hops before you can even draw a breath.
The Mystery of the “Yellow Hunger”
For a creature of such intimidating strength, their dietary habits are baffling. They are apex predators, certainly, but they possess a singular, obsessive craving for bananas. I have seen a four-hundred-pound alpha Brawler Frog ignore a perfectly good side of venison just to spend an afternoon delicately peeling a bunch of wild yellow bananas.
The Centaurs, who share the border-forests with these brutes, have a theory. They claim the potassium and sugars in the fruit are what allow the frogs to generate the “bio-electric” snap in their muscles. According to the Centaur scouts, a Brawler Frog on a “fruit-high” is twice as fast and three times as irritable. They warn travelers never to carry bright yellow gear in the jungle, as the Brawler Frog’s eyesight is, to put it mildly, optimistic.
On the Matter of Bonding
Bonding with a Brawler Frog is not about “taming”; it is about establishing a Non-Aggression Pact. They respect strength, but they value resources more.
The Ventara (the fairy folk) notoriously refuse to deal with them at all. To a Brawler Frog, a shimmering, fluttering Ventara looks less like a sentient being and more like a particularly large, spicy dragonfly. The Ventara tend to stay in the high canopies, well out of reach of those sticky, lightning-fast tongues.
To earn the respect of a “Brawler,” you must approach it during its midday rest and offer a “Gift of Abundance,” essentially a massive pile of fruit. If the frog allows you to sit within its territory while it eats, you are considered “clan-adjacent.” A bonded Brawler Frog is a terrifying guardian; they don’t use weapons, but their “Knuckle-Slam” can crack a boulder, and they have a habit of sitting on anything they find threatening until it stops moving.
Observed Magical Variations
The “Punch” of a Brawler Frog varies based on the humidity and mineral content of their home swamp.
Earth-brown, bumpy skin; massive, mud-caked knuckles.
These are the most terrestrial. They burrow into the riverbanks and can remain submerged for hours, waiting to ambush anything that disturbs their nap.
Bright, neon-green skin with blue “racing stripes” on the legs.
Exceptionally long limbs. They spend more time in the trees than on the ground. Their grip is so strong they can hang from a branch by a single toe.
Dark charcoal skin; an enormous, bright red throat sac.
These are the “Sentinels.” Their croak is so loud it can actually disorient an attacker, causing temporary deafness and vertigo.
