Lore

Cannonball Turtles are stocky, armored reptiles whose perfectly spherical shells are a marvel of natural engineering. Smooth, dense, and rounded on all sides, the shell seems designed by the earth itself for a single purpose — rolling. When threatened, the Cannonball Turtle withdraws its head, tail, and limbs into that shell with a heavy thunk, becoming an almost perfect sphere of living rock.

What follows is not stillness. The creature uses its Earth magic to charge the shell from within, building tension until it can launch itself forward with terrifying speed — rolling over obstacles, down hillsides, and through undergrowth without slowing. Ancient Cannonball Turtles develop shells so heavy and dense they leave grooves in softer earth wherever they travel, their passage visible for years afterward.

Outside of self-defense, Cannonball Turtles are peaceful grazers. They are patient, slow-moving, and remarkably long-lived — some elders are estimated to be over three centuries old, their shells calcified to near-stone density. Many Vaelorian warriors have attempted to use them as rolling battering rams, with mixed results.
